June 10 Marks 3rd Annual Saskatchewan Art Gallery Day
On Saturday, June 10, commercial art galleries across the province will open their doors to celebrate the third annual Saskatchewan Art Gallery Day. The Government of Saskatchewan has officially declared June 10 to be Saskatchewan Art Gallery Day and 16 of the province’s commercial galleries will be participating in an art walk across the province.
“It’s an opportunity for people to explore and engage with their local commercial galleries. They can meet artists and see the incredible art available they can own and take home,” explains SaskGalleries Executive Director, Kristin Wagman. “There will be special events and exhibitions going on at the galleries. It’s our biggest province-wide art day of the year.”
A full list of special exhibitions, collections, and artist talks are available at https://www.saskgalleries.ca/art-gallery-day.
Saskatchewan’s commercial art galleries represent the work of more than 850 professional artists. Most of the galleries are independent, locally owned businesses, and their sales support the work of artists who live in surrounding communities.
Wagman explains that one of SaskGalleries’ main goals is educating the public about what makes these galleries so distinct and important to the province. “Commercial galleries play a crucial role in our province by connecting artists with an audience. They are locally owned businesses in our communities that pay artists properly for their work, allowing professional artists to create beautiful works of art on a full-time basis.”
Saskatchewan Art Gallery Day isn’t just for seasoned art collectors. All of the galleries have art available in a variety of mediums and price points – everything from textiles to jewelry to sculpture and wall art.
“Some people might not know they can buy a piece they love at a commercial gallery and take it home with them. It’s a great way to get excited about art and make a unique statement in your home. Whether you’re a gallery regular or a first-time art buyer, there’s something for everyone,” Wagman says.
To help you plan your day, event maps will be available at participating galleries and at https://www.saskgalleries.ca/art-gallery-day.
