We asked and they answered. Bohème Art Gallery.
Get to know your local gallery. We talked with Bohème Art Gallery, located in the Broadway area in Saskatoon.
The family has had a presence in the neighbourhood for 77 years. Co-owner Denyse Klette’s grandfather had his first business on Broadway in 1943. Her father joined the family business and purchased the building where the gallery is located in the 70's. Denyse and Stephen Klette opened Bohème Art Gallery in 2017 and have continued the Broadway area tradition.
We asked co-owner, gallerist, and artist Denyse Klette to tell us more.
SG: Why did you open your gallery?
DK: The space where we have the gallery was originally a studio space for a few artists. When it became available, we felt like it was good timing to open up a small boutique gallery in the Broadway area.
SG: What is the most surprising piece in the gallery’s backroom?
DK: We try not to have a huge amount of stock in the backroom but usually there is a big 60 x 60” painting that is hiding back there that we can’t wait to pull out to show clients that are looking for something BIG.
SG: What did you do before you were a gallerist?
DK: Stephen had his own electrical business but being married to me, a full-time artist for over 36 years, our lives have been definitely centred around the world of art.
SG: Why did you name your gallery Bohème?
DK: Stephen thought of the name… it seemed appropriate since most artists seem to have more of a Bohemian live style, or at least wish they did.
SG: Why should someone come to your gallery?
DK: We feature 21 artists in total, from across Canada and a few from the United States. All of them have a bold use of colour and subject matter. We definitely lean towards bright and ‘happy’ art.
Happy art indeed. Co-owner Denyse Klette is the first Canadian artist to ever be signed with Disney Fine Art, and the 39th person world-wide.
