June 12 is Saskatchewan Art Gallery Day: A Date with Culture

First Time. Ever.

For the first time in Saskatchewan, 16 of Saskatchewan’s leading commercial art galleries will host an art walk across the province to celebrate June 12 as Saskatchewan Art Gallery Day. (You don’t have to walk across the entire province, just visit the ones in your area.) The day will feature live demonstrations, special art exhibitions, and more. Join us in celebrating our first annual Saskatchewan Art Gallery Day on June 12, a day entirely devoted to the original art our local commercial galleries promote, make space for, and sell.

Here are just a few things that make this incredible:

Enter to win a $750 Gift Certificate!

Love It and Keep It. Art to Buy.

Unlike the province’s public galleries, Saskatchewan’s commercial galleries are focused on promoting and selling artwork of the professional artists they represent. Our member galleries provide artists with an audience of potential customers and, at the same time, provide the public with the opportunity to appreciate and purchase original art.

That means when you fall in love with a piece at a commercial art gallery, you can take it home with you. And with a large variety of artists – from emerging, mid-career and senior – and an array of mediums and price points to choose from, there’s something for everyone to love.

100% Local

Chances are you’ve seen a commercial gallery while out and about; maybe there’s one a few blocks away, the next town over, or near your favourite camping destination. Maybe you’ve popped into one on a whim or have always been meaning to. No matter your relationship to your local commercial galleries, there’s no denying they’re must-see places in your community to visit.

Almost all commercial galleries in Saskatchewan are private, locally owned businesses. Gallerists work hard to curate and host exhibitions—staying on top of trends, conducting research, and operating within the context of centuries worth of art history — all to create fantastic experiences for local art buyers and to promote talented, professional artists who make a living from their art practice.

More than 700 Artists Represented

Saskatchewan commercial galleries support the work of more than 700 artists. These are folks who live and work in our community. So, when you buy art from a local art gallery, you know you’re supporting a neighbour who has spent a large portion of their life on honing their skills. You’ll be receiving a piece of art that is not only one-of-a-kind but is also reflecting unique culture and a perspective you’ll not find anywhere else.

A Cultural Hub

Our local commercial galleries also work hard to host and participate in several events, including Saskatchewan’s annual Art Now Fine Art Fair, the only fair of its kind in the province, as well as receptions, artist talks, and education sessions throughout the year.

These events encourage Saskatchewan residents and visitors to partake in our exciting visual arts scene, promoting tourism and establishing Saskatchewan as a vibrant and creative place to live, work, and study. The success of our local artists both nationally and internationally helps put Saskatchewan on the map. That’s something worth celebrating!

It’s a Date!

If you’ve been meaning to check out your local gallery, or to make a trip to a not-so-local one, Saskatchewan Art Gallery Day on June 12 is the perfect opportunity to do so. Whether you’re an art lover or just art curious, we encourage you to come out and celebrate. Or even make a date of it.
