We asked and they answered. Nouveau Gallery.

We asked they answered. Nouveau Gallery.

Originally founded as the Susan Whitney Gallery in 1978, Nouveau Gallery opened in 2005 in a new location and under a new name. Nestled between the Cathedral and Downtown neighbourhoods, Nouveau Gallery is located in a beautifully renovated storefront on a prominent street in Regina. The gallery showcases an eclectic mix of established and emerging artists from across Saskatchewan and the prairie provinces. This fall, they will celebrate 15 years in business.

We asked owner and gallerist Meagan Perreault to tell us more.

SG: Why did you open your gallery?

MP: I kind of fell into it. I had previously worked for Assiniboia Gallery and Susan Whitney Gallery, so when the opportunity arose, I took it.

SG: What is the most surprising item in your backroom?

MP:  Last year we acquired a small metal sculpture that was stored at the Mendel Gallery – an undocumented, non-collection object that had a note taped to it: “This piece belongs to Wilf Perreault Untitled #2 – please do not remove.” Even Wilf was floored. We think it is part of his graduate work at the University of Saskatchewan.

SG: What did you do before you were a gallerist?

MP: I had many jobs before working in the gallery world such as a warehouse packer, at an optician’s office, in retail, in food service, even as a housekeeper in Australia.

SG: Why did you name your gallery Nouveau Gallery?

MP: I didn’t want to use my own name for the gallery, but because of my heritage I named it “Nouveau”, French for new.

SG: Why should someone come to your gallery?

MP: People should come to visit our gallery because have a beautiful, light-filled space and because our art is awesome! And, of course, to visit our friendly furry greeter, Monet.
