The gallery continues its’ 38-year history of serving art patrons and tourists in its retail operation and in gallery exhibitions from May to December.
We asked owner, gallerist, and artist June Jacobs to tell us more.
SG: Why did you open your gallery?
JJ: In 1982 when I opened the Hand Wave Gallery, there were no other rural galleries or shops that featured handmade fine craft made by Saskatchewan artists. My first location was opened at the junction of Highways #16 and #2 in a building that I rented. I moved to my current location, 409 3rd Ave N, in 1986 and have been here ever since.
SG: What is your favourite piece from the gallery?
JJ: There have been many favourites over the years that find new homes, and then a new work comes in by an artist and that it is my new favourite.
SG: What was your first job?
JJ: My first professional job was as a home economist for Saskatchewan Power Corp - "Penny Power", whose position was a public relations/educator role .
SG: Why did you name your gallery Hand Wave Gallery?
JJ: In the 1980's ‘new wave’ was a pop movement. I was located on the edge of a grain field and highway thus "wave", both hand wave to passing by motorists and prairie wheat field waves as a visual component...and a bottle of scotch helped...
SG: Why should someone come to your gallery?
JJ: It holds a vast array of established fine craft artist work in the shop and gallery. I have a history of work and artists to share, it’s also a beautiful drive and the atmosphere is relaxed.
