We asked and they answered. Collector’s Choice Art Gallery.
Get to know your local gallery, Collector’s Choice Art Gallery in Saskatoon. This gallery has been in operation for more than 40 years and is also a full service framing shop. We asked Owner and Gallerist Anne Hardy to tell us more.
SG: What did you do before you were a gallerist?
AH: Before I became a gallerist, I was a lawyer in Saskatoon. I still am juggling the gallery and the law practice. Fortunately, I have very reliable staff members in both locations.
SG : Why is your gallery named Collector’s Choice Art Gallery?
AH: The gallery was named by the previous owners. The name was chosen simply to indicate that Collector's Choice Art Gallery should be the first choice of art collectors and people choosing to do framing.
SG: Why did you purchase your gallery?
AH: I have had an interest in art dating back to my mid-teens, when I began to research and collect early Canadian to mid-twentieth century landscapes and portraits. Many of the paintings, especially the early watercolours, needed to be reframed with conservation quality materials. I dealt with Collector's Choice Art Gallery for all of my framing, and also bought some artworks, including sculptures. When the previous owners decided to retire, I decided to buy the gallery; I had the intention of reducing my law practice to take over management of the gallery.
SG: What is your favourite or most unusual piece or item in your backroom?
AH: The most unusual item in the vault is a ceremonial, decorated spade presented to someone who attended the sod turning at the Dakota Dunes Casino. It was brought into the gallery to be mounted or framed, but has remained unclaimed.
My favourite item changes from time to time, but is currently the original of 'Wish List', a raven by James Clow. We have had copies of the very limited run of limited edition prints of the painting, but the artist has now decided to part with the original.
SG: Why should someone come to your gallery?
AH: The gallery offers an excellent range of artworks in all sizes, price ranges and media by local and Saskatchewan artists, including indigenous artists. We continue to welcome artists and introduce emerging artists. The gallery also offers custom framing of almost anything - artwork, photographs, militaria, sports memorabilia and more.
